Four steps to treatment
Talk to a doctor
Your family doctor, a nurse practitioner, or a walk-in clinic. In Quebec, your local CLSC can also help. Bring notes on what you've been experiencing.
Ask for the right therapy
Ask specifically for cognitive behavioural therapy with exposure and response prevention (ERP). Not every therapist offers it.
Check registration
Look up the professional on your provincial regulatory college's public registry to confirm they're licensed.
Know what's covered
Public services, workplace insurance, student plans, and employee assistance programs can all help pay for therapy.
Questions to ask a therapist
- Do you use ERP to treat OCD?
- How many people with OCD have you treated?
- What does a typical session look like?
- How will we know it's working?
- Do you offer sessions online, in French, or in English?
A good therapist will welcome these questions.
