Contamination OCD: more than germs
Contamination OCD is one of the best-known forms of OCD, and one of the most misunderstood. It's not about liking things clean. It's about fear, disgust, and doubt.
What people fear
- Germs, viruses, or getting sick
- Making someone they love sick
- Chemicals, cleaning products, or bodily fluids
- Feeling "dirty" in a way that isn't physical: after a thought, near a certain person, or in a certain place
The rituals
- Washing hands or showering many times, or in a specific way
- Cleaning objects or surfaces over and over
- Avoiding public places, door handles, shared objects, or certain people
- Changing clothes after going out
- Asking others to wash or to follow rules
The cost
Hands can crack and bleed. Hours disappear. Some people stop leaving home. Families often end up following the rules too, which makes the OCD stronger.
What helps
ERP helps people gradually touch what they fear and wait, without washing. It's always done step by step, with a therapist, starting small. Normal hygiene stays normal. The goal is to stop washing because OCD demands it.
Your next step
If this sounds like your days, the next step is a doctor or a registered mental health professional, not more research.
This article is education, not a diagnosis. Only a doctor or a registered mental health professional who has met you can tell you whether you have OCD.
