Relationship OCD: when doubt gets into love
Do I really love my partner? Am I attracted enough? What if there's someone better? What if I'm lying to myself?
Everyone has moments of doubt in a relationship. With relationship OCD, the doubt doesn't pass. It becomes constant, exhausting, and it shows up even in relationships that are going well.
What it looks like
- Analyzing your feelings over and over, looking for proof
- Comparing your partner or your relationship to others
- "Testing" your attraction or your reactions
- Asking friends, family, or the internet whether your relationship is right
- Confessing your doubts to your partner to relieve guilt
- Avoiding romantic movies, weddings, or couples who seem happy
Why it's so hard
Relationship OCD attacks something you care deeply about. The need to be 100% sure is the trap: no feeling, in any relationship, comes with certainty.
What helps
ERP helps you live with the doubt instead of trying to solve it. The goal isn't to decide whether to stay or go. It's to take the decision back from OCD, so you can see your relationship clearly.
For partners
If your partner has relationship OCD, their doubts are a symptom, not a verdict on you. Our family guide explains how to support them without getting pulled into the reassurance loop.
Your next step
If this sounds like your days, the next step is a doctor or a registered mental health professional, not more research.
This article is education, not a diagnosis. Only a doctor or a registered mental health professional who has met you can tell you whether you have OCD.
